New Mama Notebook: This is something I hope to make into a tradition! My idea is to have a beautiful (possibly hand-decorated) notebook to pass around to all the mamas at the baby shower. They can each use a page to write a special note to the new mama, including their best advice and encouraging words. After they write their personal message, they can include their favorite go-to resources that they loved (or wish they had known about!) when they were brand new mamas. This could be books, websites, videos, magazines or anything else that really helped them. They could also include names and contact information for their favorite lactation consultants, doulas, doctors or other medical professionals that the mama might need. Just be sure to explain what you want to do at least a week before the party so that the ladies all have time to get their information ready.
Moses is mentioned more often in the New Testament than any other Old Testament figure. For Christians, Moses is often a symbol of God’s law, as reinforced and expounded on in the teachings of Jesus. New Testament writers often compared Jesus’ words and deeds with Moses’ to explain Jesus’ mission. In Acts 7:39–43, 51–53, for example, the rejection of Moses by the Jews who worshipped the golden calf is likened to the rejection of Jesus by the Jews that continued in traditional Judaism.[89][90]
Rabbi Joel Grossman argued that the story is a “powerful fable of lust and betrayal”, and that Moses’ execution of the women was a symbolic condemnation of those who seek to turn sex and desire to evil purposes.[158] Alan Levin, an educational specialist with the Reform movement, has similarly suggested that the story should be taken as a cautionary tale, to “warn successive generations of Jews to watch their own idolatrous behavior”.[159]
“Baby socks are notorious for not staying on. These booties will stay on, come in a variety of colors, and for older, more mobile children they have ones with grips on the soles so kids don’t slip on slippery floors.” —Dr. Frances Benedict, pediatric emergency medical doctor, Hasbro Children’s Hospital
“This Atlanta-based team has collaborated with Peruvian artisans for the past 15 years to bring these delightful, hand-knitted dolls to children worldwide. So soft and cuddly.” — Melissa Tortorella, owner, Pink Olive
Following Carver’s death the following year, William Bradford was made governor. He feared that the remaining Pilgrims would not survive the hardships of the new land, with half their people having already died within months of arriving. Bradford evoked the symbol of Moses to the weakened and desperate Pilgrims to help calm them and give them hope: “Violence will break all. Where is the meek and humble spirit of Moses?”[117] William G. Dever explains the attitude of the Pilgrims: “We considered ourselves the ‘New Israel,’ particularly we in America. And for that reason we knew who we were, what we believed in and valued, and what our ‘manifest destiny’ was.”[118][119]
I want to preach this morning from the subject, ‘The Birth of a New Nation.’ And I would like to use as a basis for our thinking together, a story that has long since been stenciled on the mental sheets of succeeding generations. It is the story of the Exodus, the story of the flight of the Hebrew people from the bondage of Egypt, through the wilderness and finally, to the Promised Land. …The struggle of Moses, the struggle of his devoted followers as they sought to get out of Egypt.
According to traditional rabbinic biblical chronology, Moses was 80 years old when the Exodus occurred, the Israelites had been in Egypt for 210 years in total, and thus in combination with the rabbinical claim that Jochebed was born on the border of Egypt, as her parents had entered it, this would require Jochebed to have been 130 years old when she gave birth to Moses;[20] rabbinical literature regards this to have been alluded to by the biblical description of the dedication of the Israelite altar, at which 130 shekel weight of silver was offered.[18][21]
The modern scholarly consensus is that the figure of Moses is legendary, and not historical,[8] although a “Moses-like figure may have existed somewhere in the southern Transjordan in the mid-late 13th century B.C.”[33] Certainly no Egyptian sources mention Moses or the events of Exodus-Deuteronomy, nor has any archaeological evidence been discovered in Egypt or the Sinai wilderness to support the story in which he is the central figure.[34] The story of his discovery picks up a familiar motif in ancient Near Eastern mythological accounts of the ruler who rises from humble origins: Thus Sargon of Akkad’s Akkadian account of his origins runs;

One of my favorite things to do for a new-mama-to-be is to create a new mama basket. Baby showers tend to be full of baby clothes, baby blankets, baby toys… everything for the baby. I love to pamper and celebrate the mama!
Tips, ideas and instructions for making a nice, cheap baby gift basket: basically, an inexpensive gift basket for a newborn is made the same way, as a ‘normal’ one. That’s why you might like to have a look at this page here about newborn baby gift baskets in general, too.
In subsequent years, theologians linked the Ten Commandments with the formation of early democracy. Scottish theologian William Barclay described them as “the universal foundation of all things… the law without which nationhood is impossible. …Our society is founded upon it.[112] Pope Francis addressed the United States Congress in 2015 stating that all people need to “keep alive their sense of unity by means of just legislation… [and] the figure of Moses leads us directly to God and thus to the transcendent dignity of the human being.[113]
Stories of unusual events during the pregnancy of Aminah, mother of the Islamic prophet Muhammad,[28] are compared with the similar experiences of Jochebed when she was carrying Moses.[29] The significance of this comparison is understood to spring from the affinity of Arabic folklore for Hebrew traditions.[29]

In addition to the Judeo-Roman or Judeo-Hellenic historians Artapanus, Eupolemus, Josephus, and Philo, a few non-Jewish historians including Hecataeus of Abdera (quoted by Diodorus Siculus), Alexander Polyhistor, Manetho, Apion, Chaeremon of Alexandria, Tacitus and Porphyry also make reference to him. The extent to which any of these accounts rely on earlier sources is unknown.[53] Moses also appears in other religious texts such as the Mishnah (c. 200 CE), Midrash (200–1200 CE),[54] and the Quran (c. 610–53).[citation needed]

Adventure and high drama unfurl in this true story that carries all the seeds of tragedy, but ends happily. In the harsh Alaskan winter of 1917, a mother and her two young children, baby Ann and three-year old Betty, climbed into a horse-drawn sleigh, hoping to spend the winter in the kinder climate of Washington. During a violent snow storm, the horses tossed and scattered the passengers; Betty was pulled out from a swift current under ice, but baby Ann was swept away. Later in the day, two trappers found the baby in a basket floating down the icy river, and returned her, unharmed, to her mother. It’s a story of miracle, hardship, survival, and hope that is strongly enhanced by the author’s suspenseful telling and the illustrator’s exquisite winter scenes. His art is full of detail, from the red-cheeked, cherry-nosed travelers, to the cold clouds puffing from the horse’s nostrils, to the evident ferocity of the winter storm. There are many joys to new motherhood—the first, of course, being the baby. The runner up, however, may well be all the amazing food people send you upon having recently given birth. Indeed, food gifts are great to give new parents. Baby clothes are cute, but it’s harder to guess people’s taste in infant outfits than it is to speculate whether or not they like really good cheese. In the days after I gave birth, I was exhausted, starving, and overwhelmed—but the arrival of a Russ & Daughters gift package to my doorstep was truly thrilling, not to mention sustaining.
Grade 1-3?Using a true story from 1917 Alaska, the Rands have created a perfect marriage of text and illustration. Traveling from Fairbanks to Seattle in midwinter, Marie Boyer and her two daughters, Betty and Ann, are among passengers and freight tossed into an icebound river when the horses pulling their big sleigh panic. Betty is pulled under the ice and Ann, in her snug basket, vanishes in the Arctic dark. Rescued, Betty and the other passengers are comforted at a nearby lodge while a desperate search is mounted to find Ann. At the last moment, two trappers arrive to a joyous reception, carrying basket and baby Ann, discovered sliding down the river atop the ice, pushed by the freezing wind. Gloria Rand’s detailed, dramatic text is well matched by Ted Rand’s robustly wintry illustrations, and presents the hardships faced by Alaskan pioneers in a manner comprehensible to the young. Almost unbelievable in these days of jet planes and superhighways, this gripping tale of near tragedy will enrich a social studies curriculum. Even more, though, it’s an exciting “good read.”?Patricia Manning, formerly at Eastchester Public Library,

When shopping for baby gift baskets, pay attention to what each basket includes and consider what the family receiving the basket is most likely to want or need. Some common gift basket items are practical supplies that are useful for nearly everyone with a baby, including receiving blankets, burp cloths, hats, booties, baby body wash or shampoo and baby lotion. Most baskets also include cuddly stuffed animals and other playtime items, such as rattles. They may also include picture frames, keepsakes and music CDs.
The name King Mesha of Moab has been linked to that of Moses. Mesha also is associated with narratives of an exodus and a conquest, and several motifs in stories about him are shared with the Exodus tale and that regarding Israel’s war with Moab (2 Kings 3). Moab rebels against oppression, like Moses, leads his people out of Israel, as Moses does from Egypt, and his first-born son is slaughtered at the wall of Kir-hareseth as the firstborn of Israel are condemned to slaughter in the Exodus story, “an infernal passover that delivers Mesha while wrath burns against his enemies”.[50]
After the establishment of settled life in Egypt in early times, which took place, according to the mythical account, in the period of the gods and heroes, the first… to persuade the multitudes to use written laws was Mneves [Moses], a man not only great of soul but also in his life the most public-spirited of all lawgivers whose names are recorded.[55]
Furthermore, through the law, Moses is believed to have led the Hebrews ‘to the highest possible degree of civilization at that period.’ Abdul’l-Baha asserts that the ancient Greek philosophers regarded “the illustrious men of Israel as models of perfection.” Chief among these philosophers, he says, was Socrates who “visited Syria, and took from the children of Israel the teachings of the Unity of God and of the immortality of the soul.”[109]

“Mustela baby products are the best-smelling baby products in the world. They’re also European, so obviously superior in every way. I was given this exact gift bag, and I loved, loved, loved it. I thought the thing that was like ‘no rinse cleansing fluid’ was dumb, and that I’d be unlikely to ever use it — since I planned on bathing my baby like a human being. But — this stuff is amazing for cleaning under a baby’s neck. They get very gnarly neck cheese from little dribbles of milk. It’s also good after a big poop. Regardless of how well you wipe a butt with baby wipes, it will still have a faint poop smell that you might notice if you’ve literally ever kissed your baby’s ass.” — Elizabeth Verrelli, event planner, mother of a 2-year-old

However, some Jewish sources defend Moses’ role. The Chasam Sofer emphasizes that this war was not fought at Moses’ behest, but was commanded by God as an act of revenge against the Midianite women,[154] who, according to the Biblical account, had seduced the Israelites and led them to sin. In Legend of the Jews, Phinehas son of Eleazar defend their innocent action in leaving the women remain alive because Moses instructed them to take revenge “only to the Midianites,” without mentioning “Midianite women.”[155] As God had also commanded them to be a holy nation,[156] the “polluted” or unvirgin women should not be preferred among sons of Israel, therefore the “pure” or virgin women are more sacred for themselves.[157]

Moses, along with Elijah, is presented as meeting with Jesus in all three Gospel accounts of the Transfiguration of Jesus in Matthew 17, Mark 9, and Luke 9, respectively. Jesus refers to the scribes and the Pharisees of the Temple as “seated in the chair of Moses” (Greek: επι της μωυσεως καθεδρας, epi tēs Mōuseōs kathedras) [91]

35. An Egyptian priest named Moses, who possessed a portion of the country called the Lower Egypt, being dissatisfied with the established institutions there, left it and came to Judaea with a large body of people who worshipped the Divinity. He declared and taught that the Egyptians and Africans entertained erroneous sentiments, in representing the Divinity under the likeness of wild beasts and cattle of the field; that the Greeks also were in error in making images of their gods after the human form. For God [said he] may be this one thing which encompasses us all, land and sea, which we call heaven, or the universe, or the nature of things….

According to Feldman, Josephus also attaches particular significance to Moses’ possession of the “cardinal virtues of wisdom, courage, temperance, and justice.” He also includes piety as an added fifth virtue. In addition, he “stresses Moses’ willingness to undergo toil and his careful avoidance of bribery. Like Plato’s philosopher-king, Moses excels as an educator.”[71]

Moses is honoured among Jews today as the “lawgiver of Israel”, and he delivers several sets of laws in the course of the four books. The first is the Covenant Code (Exodus 20:19–23:33), the terms of the covenant which God offers to the Israelites at biblical Mount Sinai. Embedded in the covenant are the Decalogue (the Ten Commandments, Exodus 20:1–17) and the Book of the Covenant (Exodus 20:22–23:19).[32] The entire Book of Leviticus constitutes a second body of law, the Book of Numbers begins with yet another set, and the Book of Deuteronomy another.[citation needed]

Historian Gladys L. Knight describes how leaders who emerged during slavery time and after often personified the Moses symbol. “The symbol of Moses was empowering in that it served to amplify a need for freedom.”[125] Therefore, when Abraham Lincoln was assassinated in 1865 after freeing the slaves, Black Americans said they had lost “their Moses”.[126] Lincoln biographer Charles Carleton Coffin writes, “The millions whom Abraham Lincoln delivered from slavery will ever liken him to Moses, the deliverer of Israel.”[127] Similarly, Harriet Tubman, who rescued approximately seventy enslaved family and friends, was also described as the “Moses” of her people.[128]

Does she want to use all-natural products on her baby to avoid toxins? I think you get the idea!

The Biblical account of Moses’ birth provides him with a folk etymology to explain the ostensible meaning of his name.[15][16] He is said to have received it from the Pharaoh’s daughter: “he became her son. She named him Moses (Moshe), saying, ‘I drew him out (meshitihu) of the water.'”[17][18] This explanation links it to a verb mashah, meaning “to draw out”, which makes the Pharaoh’s daughter’s declaration a play on words.[18][19] The princess made a grammatical mistake which is prophetic of his future role in legend, as someone who will “draw the people of Israel out of Egypt through the waters of the Red Sea.”[20]

For God [said he] may be this one thing which encompasses us all, land and sea, which we call heaven, or the universe, or the nature of things….
“I received the Leachco Sling–style Infant Lounger as a gift with my second baby, and I love it [editors’ note: we’ve written about this before], especially since I have a 23-month-old as well. I can prop this up on the kitchen table or somewhere out of reach of her ‘gentle’ touches, and know that everyone is safe. It’s also great when it’s time to shower, go to the bathroom, or make a quick breakfast.” — Rebecca Schultz, product designer, mother of a 23-month-old and a 6-week-old
From Egypt, Moses led the Israelites to biblical Mount Sinai, where he was given the Ten Commandments from God, written on stone tablets. However, since Moses remained a long time on the mountain, some of the people feared that he might be dead, so they made a statue of a golden calf and worshiped it, thus disobeying and angering God and Moses. Moses, out of anger, broke the tablets, and later ordered the elimination of those who had worshiped the golden statue, which was melted down and fed to the idolaters.[29] He also wrote the ten commandments on a new set of tablets. Later at Mount Sinai, Moses and the elders entered into a covenant, by which Israel would become the people of YHWH, obeying his laws, and YHWH would be their god. Moses delivered the laws of God to Israel, instituted the priesthood under the sons of Moses’ brother Aaron, and destroyed those Israelites who fell away from his worship. In his final act at Sinai, God gave Moses instructions for the Tabernacle, the mobile shrine by which he would travel with Israel to the Promised Land.[30]

According to Josephus Flavius the birth of Moses was an extraordinary event because Jochebed was spared the pain of child-bearing due to both her and Amram’s piety. The Haggadah extends this miraculous nature to Moses’ conception by marking as 120 the age of Jochebed at conception. Several rabbinic commentaries attest to this and comment that maidenhood was restored to Jochebed at the time of her marriage to Amram. The restoration of maidenhood also included the resumption of her fertility.[22]

As a new mom myself (the baby is a month old as of yesterday), here are some of the things that I’ve found most helpful that friends and family have given to us. The most helpful thing has been food, specifically food that can be frozen and used later like soups, stews, lasagna, casseroles, etc. I don’t know if the person that you want to help is breastfeeding, but a little basket of snacks is great. You can’t go wrong with diapers, wipes, newborn toys, a pacifier (try to make sure it’s BPA free though).
Important figures in the Baha’i religion, such as Abdul’l-Baha, have highlighted the fact that Moses, like Abraham, had none of the makings of a great man of history, but through God’s assistance he was able achieve many great things. He is described as having been “for a long time a shepherd in the wilderness,” of having had a stammer, and of being “much hated and detested” by the Pharaoh and the ancient Egyptians of his time. He is said to have been raised in an oppressive household, and to have been known, in Egypt, as a man who had committed murder – though he had done so in order to prevent an act of cruelty.[109]
Jochebed’s name is given various allegorical interpretations;[12][13] the Leviticus Rabbah identifies her as the person named in the Book of Chronicles as Jehudijah,[14] by arguing that the name should be interpreted as meaning the Jewess, in reference to her founding the Jewish nation by disobeying the Pharaoh’s order to dispose of the firstborn males.[15]
Moses is mentioned more in the Quran than any other individual and his life is narrated and recounted more than that of any other Islamic prophet.[100] In general, Moses is described in ways which parallel the Islamic prophet Muhammad,[101] and “his character exhibits some of the main themes of Islamic theology,” including the “moral injunction that we are to submit ourselves to God.”[citation needed]
The girl brought the basket over to her, and when Pharaoh’s daughter opened it, the light startled Moses so he woke up and started to cry.  “What a sweet, beautiful little baby.  It must be one of the Israelite’s,”  Pharaoh’s daughter said to her servants.

Michelangelo’s statue of Moses in the Church of San Pietro in Vincoli, Rome, is one of the most familiar masterpieces in the world.[citation needed] The horns the sculptor included on Moses’ head are the result of a mistranslation of the Hebrew Bible into the Latin Vulgate Bible with which Michelangelo was familiar. The Hebrew word taken from Exodus means either a “horn” or an “irradiation.” Experts at the Archaeological Institute of America show that the term was used when Moses “returned to his people after seeing as much of the Glory of the Lord as human eye could stand,” and his face “reflected radiance.”[136] In early Jewish art, moreover, Moses is often “shown with rays coming out of his head.”[137]
The modern scholarly consensus is that the figure of Moses is legendary, and not historical,[8] although a “Moses-like figure may have existed somewhere in the southern Transjordan in the mid-late 13th century B.C.”[33] Certainly no Egyptian sources mention Moses or the events of Exodus-Deuteronomy, nor has any archaeological evidence been discovered in Egypt or the Sinai wilderness to support the story in which he is the central figure.[34] The story of his discovery picks up a familiar motif in ancient Near Eastern mythological accounts of the ruler who rises from humble origins: Thus Sargon of Akkad’s Akkadian account of his origins runs;
Most of what is known about Moses from the Bible comes from the books of Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers and Deuteronomy.[75] The majority of scholars consider the compilation of these books to go back to the Persian period, 538–332 BCE, but based on earlier written and oral traditions.[76][77] There is a wealth of stories and additional information about Moses in the Jewish apocrypha and in the genre of rabbinical exegesis known as Midrash, as well as in the primary works of the Jewish oral law, the Mishnah and the Talmud. Moses is also given a number of bynames in Jewish tradition. The Midrash identifies Moses as one of seven biblical personalities who were called by various names.[78] Moses’ other names were: Jekuthiel (by his mother), Heber (by his father), Jered (by Miriam), Avi Zanoah (by Aaron), Avi Gedor (by Kohath), Avi Soco (by his wet-nurse), Shemaiah ben Nethanel (by people of Israel).[79] Moses is also attributed the names Toviah (as a first name), and Levi (as a family name) (Vayikra Rabbah 1:3), Heman,[80] Mechoqeiq (lawgiver)[81] and Ehl Gav Ish (Numbers 12:3).[82] In another exegesis, Moses had ascended to the first heaven until the seventh, even visited Paradise and Hell alive, after he saw the Divine vision in Mount Horeb.[83]
In a metaphorical sense in the Christian tradition, a “Moses” has been referred to as the leader who delivers the people from a terrible situation. Among the Presidents of the United States known to have used the symbolism of Moses were Harry S. Truman, Jimmy Carter, Ronald Reagan, Bill Clinton, George W. Bush and Barack Obama, who referred to his supporters as “the Moses generation.”[111]
From Sinai, Moses led the Israelites to the Desert of Paran on the border of Canaan. From there he sent twelve spies into the land. The spies returned with samples of the land’s fertility, but warned that its inhabitants were giants. The people were afraid and wanted to return to Egypt, and some rebelled against Moses and against God. Moses told the Israelites that they were not worthy to inherit the land, and would wander the wilderness for forty years until the generation who had refused to enter Canaan had died, so that it would be their children who would possess the land.[31]
