If the new mom is planning to nurse her baby, you could put together a basket that she can keep near her. In that basket, you could fill it with water bottles, a lip balm, a magazine, and a pad of paper and a pen. Leave a spot for the TV remote and phone. Extras would be a baby blanket, some hand lotion, a little snack or two, some cotton swabs, baby nail clippers, and whatever else you can think of that your friend will like and use. It is nice to have everything close by. When the new mom is unable to get up because of a sleeping or nursing baby, it is handy to have everything close by, all in one basket.
The story of Jochebed is thought to be described in the Book of Exodus (2:1–10) – although she is not explicitly named here. (Her name is first mentioned in Exodus 6:20.) She lived in Egypt, where the descendants of Israel were being oppressed. The Pharaoh had decreed that all their baby boys were to be thrown into the Nile, because he feared that they might become too powerful. When Moses, her youngest child, was born, Jochebed therefore hid him for three months until she could hide him no longer. To save her son’s life, she made a wooden chest of bulrushes, made it watertight with slime and pitch and put the child in it. Fully aware that she (Jochebed) would not be able to protect Moshes from the Pharaoh’s cruelty, Jochebed placed Moses in a basket and released him in the flow of River Nile. The basket fell in the hands of the Pharaoh’s daughter who was bathing in the river. She was a kind-hearted lady and was filled with love and compassion on seeing the baby. She secretly sneaked the baby into the palace. Moved with compassion when she discovered the child, she decided to adopt him. The “sister” of the child (presumed to be Miriam), who had come forward, suggested to find her a Hebrew woman to nurse the child. The Pharaoh’s daughter agreed and so Miriam called her mother, who was appointed to take care of him. Thus Jochebed nursed her son until he was old enough and brought him to the Pharaoh’s daughter, who adopted him as her son. As Moses grew up Jochebed gave Moses all the traditional Jewish education and knowledge, ensuring his upbringing was Jewish. As result, he could not bear the injustice done by Egyptians on the Jews. Moses convinced the Pharaoh to amend his oppressive laws. His behavior made him popular among the Jews[4].The story continues with Moses, who grew up to become the leader of the Exodus, leading his people out of the land of Egypt.

The Septuagint, the Greek version of the Hebrew Bible, influenced Longinus, who may have been the author of the great book of literary criticism, On the Sublime. The date of composition is unknown, but it is commonly assigned to the late Ist century C.E.[66]
After the establishment of settled life in Egypt in early times, which took place, according to the mythical account, in the period of the gods and heroes, the first… to persuade the multitudes to use written laws was Mneves [Moses], a man not only great of soul but also in his life the most public-spirited of all lawgivers whose names are recorded.[55]

“I always gift the book Twelve Hours’ Sleep by Twelve Weeks Old. We have twins, and the best gift my husband and I could get is two babies that sleep through the night by the time I went back to work. It was a very easy, practical, and gentle way of sleep training a baby (or two).” —Julia Sloan, senior vice-president, Nars Cosmetics, mother of 4-year-old twins and a 20-month old
Many of our baby gift baskets, cookie bouquets, and diaper cakes also double as perfect baby shower centerpieces too. They’ll look great on display and the proud mom-to-be will have a cherished gift to take home as a memory of her special day.

References to Moses were used by the Puritans, who relied on the story of Moses to give meaning and hope to the lives of Pilgrims seeking religious and personal freedom in America. John Carver was the first governor of Plymouth colony and first signer of the Mayflower Compact, which he wrote in 1620 during the ship Mayflower’s three-month voyage. He inspired the Pilgrims with a “sense of earthly grandeur and divine purpose,” notes historian Jon Meacham,[114] and was called the “Moses of the Pilgrims.”[115] Early American writer James Russell Lowell noted the similarity of the founding of America by the Pilgrims to that of ancient Israel by Moses:
His sister watched the baby from afar as the pharaoh’s daughter came down to the river to bathe. She noticed the basket among the reeds and had it brought to her. She opened it, saw baby Moses, and knew that he was one of the Hebrew’s children. The pharaoh’s daughter brought a Hebrew woman to nurse the child. The child grew, and the pharaoh’s daughter took him as her son. She called him Moses, because she drew him from the water.

Most of the Israelites lived in Egypt where there were also a lot of people called Egyptians.  Too bad they couldn’t all just see each other as the same.  But as you’ll soon find out the Israelites and the Egyptians were treated very differently.
The Quran relates the story of Moses with some added details and slight differences. Jochebed’s (Arabic: يوكابد‎ Yūkābad) efforts to save the baby Moses are recounted, along with the parting of the Red Sea, the burning bush and the Ten Commandments.[27]

In subsequent years, theologians linked the Ten Commandments with the formation of early democracy. Scottish theologian William Barclay described them as “the universal foundation of all things… the law without which nationhood is impossible. …Our society is founded upon it.[112] Pope Francis addressed the United States Congress in 2015 stating that all people need to “keep alive their sense of unity by means of just legislation… [and] the figure of Moses leads us directly to God and thus to the transcendent dignity of the human being.[113]

The spiritual thirst of mankind has for ages been quenched at Hebrew fountains; but the embodiment in human institutions of truths uttered by the Son of Man eighteen centuries ago was to be mainly the work of Puritan thought and Puritan self-devotion. …If their municipal regulations smack somewhat of Judaism, yet there can be no nobler aim or more practical wisdom than theirs; for it was to make the law of man a living counterpart of the law of God, in their highest conception of it.

On the banks of the Jordan River, in sight of the land, Moses assembled the tribes. After recalling their wanderings he delivered God’s laws by which they must live in the land, sang a song of praise and pronounced a blessing on the people, and passed his authority to Joshua, under whom they would possess the land. Moses then went up Mount Nebo to the top of Pisgah, looked over the promised land of Israel spread out before him, and died, at the age of one hundred and twenty. More humble than any other man (Num. 12:3), “there hath not arisen a prophet since in Israel like unto Moses, whom YHWH knew face to face” (Deuteronomy 34:10). The New Testament states that after Moses’ death, Michael the Archangel and the Devil disputed over his body (Epistle of Jude 1:9).[citation needed]

Many people put receiving blankets, baby wipes, and rattles in these baskets. I put a dozen real cloth diapers (no microfibers), homemade burp pads (flannels with a simple stitch border), and a large, very thick “laydown” pad made with a piece of foam and two large pieces of flannel stitched together. These are all hard to impossible to find and worth their weight in gold. The laydown pad in particular is useful in places where you don’t trust the cleanliness of a place to put your baby down either to change or for a quick nap.
According to Josephus Flavius the birth of Moses was an extraordinary event because Jochebed was spared the pain of child-bearing due to both her and Amram’s piety. The Haggadah extends this miraculous nature to Moses’ conception by marking as 120 the age of Jochebed at conception. Several rabbinic commentaries attest to this and comment that maidenhood was restored to Jochebed at the time of her marriage to Amram. The restoration of maidenhood also included the resumption of her fertility.[22]

Another author explains, “When Saint Jerome translated the Old Testament into Latin, he thought no one but Christ should glow with rays of light — so he advanced the secondary translation.[138][139] However, writer J. Stephen Lang points out that Jerome’s version actually described Moses as “giving off hornlike rays,” and he “rather clumsily translated it to mean ‘having horns.'”[140] It has also been noted that he had Moses seated on a throne, yet Moses was never given the title of a King nor ever sat on such thrones.[141]

One of the problems with having a new baby is that you crave healthy food but have no time to make it for yourself. The beauty of this gift basket from Mouth.com—home to many great food gift baskets for all occasions—is that it includes items that are both snacky and at least somewhat healthy. (See: Barely Sweet Gluten-Free Granola, coconut pecan granola bars, and nori sesame gourmet popcorn.) It also includes some straight-up non-healthy treats—like the all-natural white-chocolate macadamia peanut butter—and a cute unisex swaddle.
On July 4, 1776, immediately after the Declaration of Independence was officially passed, the Continental Congress asked John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, and Benjamin Franklin to design a seal that would clearly represent a symbol for the new United States. They chose the symbol of Moses leading the Israelites to freedom.[120] The Founding Fathers of the United States inscribed the words of Moses on the Liberty Bell: “Proclaim Liberty thro’ all the Land to all the Inhabitants thereof.” (Leviticus 25)
Textual scholars attribute the genealogy to the Book of Generations, a hypothetical document originating from a similar religiopolitical group and date to the priestly source.[23] According to biblical scholars, the Torah’s genealogy for Levi’s descendants, is actually an aetiological myth reflecting the fact that there were four different groups among the Levites – the Gershonites, Kohathites, Merarites, and Aaronids;[24] Aaron – the eponymous ancestor of the Aaronids – couldn’t be portrayed as a brother to Gershon, Kohath, and Merari, as the narrative about the birth of Moses (brother of Aaron), which textual scholars attribute to the earlier Elohist source, mentions only that both his parents were Levites (without identifying their names).[25] Biblical scholars suspect that the Elohist account offers both matrilinial and patrilinial descent from Levites in order to magnify the religious credentials of Moses.[24]
“These bibs are the best. My husband thought they were weird because they are kind of stiff. But that’s a good thing! When you see how much food collects in the bottom of those bibs, you will understand the logic of choosing that particular material type. Also, you can just clean them with soap and a sponge. Anything that you don’t have to launder is great, bibs especially. They get very soiled and stained. And, honestly, the last thing you want to do is stain-treat a baby bib. I guess you don’t really have to but I always hated putting my daughter in a clean bib with stains on it.” —Elizabeth Verrelli, event planner, mother of a 2-year-old
The name King Mesha of Moab has been linked to that of Moses. Mesha also is associated with narratives of an exodus and a conquest, and several motifs in stories about him are shared with the Exodus tale and that regarding Israel’s war with Moab (2 Kings 3). Moab rebels against oppression, like Moses, leads his people out of Israel, as Moses does from Egypt, and his first-born son is slaughtered at the wall of Kir-hareseth as the firstborn of Israel are condemned to slaughter in the Exodus story, “an infernal passover that delivers Mesha while wrath burns against his enemies”.[50]
However, some Jewish sources defend Moses’ role. The Chasam Sofer emphasizes that this war was not fought at Moses’ behest, but was commanded by God as an act of revenge against the Midianite women,[154] who, according to the Biblical account, had seduced the Israelites and led them to sin. In Legend of the Jews, Phinehas son of Eleazar defend their innocent action in leaving the women remain alive because Moses instructed them to take revenge “only to the Midianites,” without mentioning “Midianite women.”[155] As God had also commanded them to be a holy nation,[156] the “polluted” or unvirgin women should not be preferred among sons of Israel, therefore the “pure” or virgin women are more sacred for themselves.[157]

The first thing you’ll need is a basket or pretty container of some kind. Ask about their plans for decorating the baby’s room and use that for inspiration. For the basket below, the plan was pink and brown, so I bought a basket that would fit their motif and be useful for storing baby odds and ends. You’ll also want a few small boxes or blocks of hard florist’s foam to create a base for the items you put inside. I like to make “stair steps” with two levels. Depending on the items you choose, you may have the higher level towards the front or the back.

In Strabo’s writings of the history of Judaism as he understood it, he describes various stages in its development: from the first stage, including Moses and his direct heirs; to the final stage where “the Temple of Jerusalem continued to be surrounded by an aura of sanctity.” Strabo’s “positive and unequivocal appreciation of Moses’ personality is among the most sympathetic in all ancient literature.”[62] His portrayal of Moses is said to be similar to the writing of Hecataeus who “described Moses as a man who excelled in wisdom and courage.”[62]

The Jewish historian Artapanus of Alexandria (2nd century BCE), portrayed Moses as a cultural hero, alien to the Pharaonic court. According to theologian John Barclay, the Moses of Artapanus “clearly bears the destiny of the Jews, and in his personal, cultural and military splendor, brings credit to the whole Jewish people.”[56]
Moses is one of the most important of God’s messengers in the Bahá’í Faith being designated a Manifestation of God.[107] An epithet of Moses in Baha’i scriptures is the One Who Conversed with God.[108]

From Sinai, Moses led the Israelites to the Desert of Paran on the border of Canaan. From there he sent twelve spies into the land. The spies returned with samples of the land’s fertility, but warned that its inhabitants were giants. The people were afraid and wanted to return to Egypt, and some rebelled against Moses and against God. Moses told the Israelites that they were not worthy to inherit the land, and would wander the wilderness for forty years until the generation who had refused to enter Canaan had died, so that it would be their children who would possess the land.[31]

“This is a super-gross concept but so helpful. It’s essentially a straw for sucking snot from your baby’s nose. Someone gave this to me; I didn’t pay much attention until I was up half the night with a newborn who was so congested it kept her awake. Did you know that when babies are born they swallow a bunch of amniotic fluid and it gets stuck in their sinuses? I didn’t either. This thing was essentially for those first few weeks and continues to be a lifesaver (until this kid can blow her own nose.)” —Cynthia Domingo-Foraste, attorney, mother of a 9-month-old

Michelangelo’s statue of Moses in the Church of San Pietro in Vincoli, Rome, is one of the most familiar masterpieces in the world.[citation needed] The horns the sculptor included on Moses’ head are the result of a mistranslation of the Hebrew Bible into the Latin Vulgate Bible with which Michelangelo was familiar. The Hebrew word taken from Exodus means either a “horn” or an “irradiation.” Experts at the Archaeological Institute of America show that the term was used when Moses “returned to his people after seeing as much of the Glory of the Lord as human eye could stand,” and his face “reflected radiance.”[136] In early Jewish art, moreover, Moses is often “shown with rays coming out of his head.”[137]

Non-biblical writings about Jews, with references to the role of Moses, first appear at the beginning of the Hellenistic period, from 323 BCE to about 146 BCE. Shmuel notes that “a characteristic of this literature is the high honour in which it holds the peoples of the East in general and some specific groups among these peoples.”[52]

It’s also great when it’s time to shower, go to the bathroom, or make a quick breakfast.” — Rebecca Schultz, product designer, mother of a 23-month-old and a 6-week-old

Arising in part from his age and that “his eye had not dimmed, and his vigor had not diminished,” the phrase “may you live to 120” has become a common blessing among Jews, especially since 120 is elsewhere stated as the maximum age for Noah’s descendants (one interpretation of Genesis 6:3).

I hope that this list got your creative juices flowing! Now, just make or buy whatever strikes your fancy and get that basket put together. It’s best to start with the largest items, putting them towards the back, and filling in with smaller ones. You can also use coordinating tissue paper as filler, if needed. Play around and get the basket just how you like it, then either take a picture so that you can take it apart and reassemble it at the party (if you can’t leave it as it is for the ride), or use some of that spiffy shrink-wrap from the craft store! She’s going to love it!

She appears briefly in The Prince of Egypt under the name ‘Yocheved’, portrayed by (and resembling) the late Israeli vocalist Ofra Haza. In the film, she sings a lullaby to baby Moses as she sets the basket carrying him adrift in the river, also pleading the river to deliver Moses “somewhere he can live free”. Ofra sang the lullaby in 18 languages for the film’s dubbing (including her native Hebrew language, which was the latter’s native tongue).

Instead of getting stuff for the baby, make the gift basket for the new mom. Include bubble bath, eye mask, hand lotion, nail file, facial scrub, pumice stone, etc. Add a coupon for an hour of baby-sitting services. New moms don’t take time for themselves, so a little pampering will go a long way.
“This is a bit much, but totally important: For collecting milk, you place this collector into the bra-cup on your non-nursing side. It’s unreal how much milk I save.” — Alicia Birr, naturopathic doctor, mother of a 4-month-old
Moses is mentioned more often in the New Testament than any other Old Testament figure. For Christians, Moses is often a symbol of God’s law, as reinforced and expounded on in the teachings of Jesus. New Testament writers often compared Jesus’ words and deeds with Moses’ to explain Jesus’ mission. In Acts 7:39–43, 51–53, for example, the rejection of Moses by the Jews who worshipped the golden calf is likened to the rejection of Jesus by the Jews that continued in traditional Judaism.[89][90]

My neighbor is about to become a first-time mom. Along with the typical baby gift, I’d also like to give her a new mom gift basket. Since we haven’t had children yet, I’m not sure what to include in the basket? Can anyone give me some ideas for what to put in a new mom’s gift basket?

“A friend from high school gave me a supersoft, and not ugly, nursing cover that can also be wrapped over a stroller as a shade on a sunny or windy day. We also used it as a blanket for our daughter in the car. It came in super handy for all sorts of purposes, and lives in her diaper bag.” — Maryse Brand, mother of a 14-month-old

Once kids are a little older, it’s great for playing with play-doh, too.” —Amanda Olsen

“This was my little sleep miracle when my babe was a newborn. It creates a rhythmic shush sound that’s soothing to babies. She loved it, and it lulled her to sleep every time. It only has two settings — 15 minutes or 30 minutes. It’s no frills, but amazing, and so small it’s easy to take on trips.” — Chelsa Crowley, founder, Stowaway Cosmetics, mother of a 9-month-old
According to Feldman, Josephus also attaches particular significance to Moses’ possession of the “cardinal virtues of wisdom, courage, temperance, and justice.” He also includes piety as an added fifth virtue. In addition, he “stresses Moses’ willingness to undergo toil and his careful avoidance of bribery. Like Plato’s philosopher-king, Moses excels as an educator.”[71]

Moses, along with Elijah, is presented as meeting with Jesus in all three Gospel accounts of the Transfiguration of Jesus in Matthew 17, Mark 9, and Luke 9, respectively. Jesus refers to the scribes and the Pharisees of the Temple as “seated in the chair of Moses” (Greek: επι της μωυσεως καθεδρας, epi tēs Mōuseōs kathedras) [91]

The Quran relates the story of Moses with some added details and slight differences. Jochebed’s (Arabic: يوكابد‎ Yūkābad) efforts to save the baby Moses are recounted, along with the parting of the Red Sea, the burning bush and the Ten Commandments.[27]
Stories of unusual events during the pregnancy of Aminah, mother of the Islamic prophet Muhammad,[28] are compared with the similar experiences of Jochebed when she was carrying Moses.[29] The significance of this comparison is understood to spring from the affinity of Arabic folklore for Hebrew traditions.[29]
