God sent Moses back to Egypt to demand the release of the Israelites from slavery. Moses said that he could not speak eloquently, so God allowed Aaron, his brother, to become his spokesperson. After the Ten Plagues, Moses led the Exodus of the Israelites out of Egypt and across the Red Sea, after which they based themselves at Mount Sinai, where Moses received the Ten Commandments. After 40 years of wandering in the desert, Moses died within sight of the Promised Land on Mount Nebo.
Keeler, Annabel (2005), “Moses from a Muslim Perspective”, in Solomon, Norman; Harries, Richard; Winter, Tim, Abraham’s Children: Jews, Christians, and Muslims in Conversation, T&T Clark, pp. 55–66, ISBN 9780567081711.
Moses has traditionally been regarded as the author of those four books and the Book of Genesis, which together comprise the Torah, the first and most revered section of the Hebrew Bible.
“I took this grocery-cart cover with me everywhere we went. It was great to prevent germs in the grocery store or on high chairs in restaurants, and even better, my daughter loved playing with it.” —Andrea Roberts, teacher, mother of a 5-year-old
Nevertheless, like Abraham, through the assistance of God, he achieved great things and gained renown even beyond the Levant. Chief among these achievements was the freeing of his people, the Hebrews, from bondage in Egypt and leading “them to the Holy Land.” He is viewed as the one who bestowed on Israel ‘the religious and the civil law’ which gave them “honour among all nations,” and which spread their fame to different parts of the world.
One Israelite mother was afraid they would find her baby boy. She hid him for three months. Then the mother put her baby in a basket. She put the basket in the tall grass by the river. The baby’s sister, Miriam, stood by to watch the baby.
I do an “Oh No! It’s 3am” basket! I get gas drops, teething items, over-the-counter baby pain meds, baby thermometer, baby medicine dispensers, etc. The idea is to include anything that will help with issues that happen in the middle of the night. That way, the new parents are prepared for just about anything.
A motley crowd was thus collected and abandoned in the desert. While all the other outcasts lay idly lamenting, one of them, named Moses, advised them not to look for help to gods or men, since both had deserted them, but to trust rather in themselves, and accept as divine the guidance of the first being, by whose aid they should get out of their present plight.
According to the Book of Exodus, Moses was born in a time when his people, the Israelites, an enslaved minority, were increasing in numbers and the Egyptian Pharaoh was worried that they might ally themselves with Egypt’s enemies. Moses’ Hebrew mother, Jochebed, secretly hid him when the Pharaoh ordered all newborn Hebrew boys to be killed in order to reduce the population of the Israelites. Through the Pharaoh’s daughter (identified as Queen Bithia in the Midrash), the child was adopted as a foundling from the Nile river and grew up with the Egyptian royal family. After killing an Egyptian slavemaster (because the slavemaster was smiting a Hebrew), Moses fled across the Red Sea to Midian, where he encountered The Angel of the Lord, speaking to him from within a burning bush on Mount Horeb (which he regarded as the Mountain of God).

After the establishment of settled life in Egypt in early times, which took place, according to the mythical account, in the period of the gods and heroes, the first… to persuade the multitudes to use written laws was Mneves [Moses], a man not only great of soul but also in his life the most public-spirited of all lawgivers whose names are recorded.
Grade 1-3?Using a true story from 1917 Alaska, the Rands have created a perfect marriage of text and illustration. Traveling from Fairbanks to Seattle in midwinter, Marie Boyer and her two daughters, Betty and Ann, are among passengers and freight tossed into an icebound river when the horses pulling their big sleigh panic. Betty is pulled under the ice and Ann, in her snug basket, vanishes in the Arctic dark. Rescued, Betty and the other passengers are comforted at a nearby lodge while a desperate search is mounted to find Ann. At the last moment, two trappers arrive to a joyous reception, carrying basket and baby Ann, discovered sliding down the river atop the ice, pushed by the freezing wind. Gloria Rand’s detailed, dramatic text is well matched by Ted Rand’s robustly wintry illustrations, and presents the hardships faced by Alaskan pioneers in a manner comprehensible to the young. Almost unbelievable in these days of jet planes and superhighways, this gripping tale of near tragedy will enrich a social studies curriculum. Even more, though, it’s an exciting “good read.”?Patricia Manning, formerly at Eastchester Public Library,
The Roman historian Tacitus (c. 56–120 CE) refers to Moses by noting that the Jewish religion was monotheistic and without a clear image. His primary work, wherein he describes Jewish philosophy, is his Histories (c. 100), where, according to Arthur Murphy, as a result of the Jewish worship of one God, “pagan mythology fell into contempt.” Tacitus states that, despite various opinions current in his day regarding the Jews’ ethnicity, most of his sources are in agreement that there was an Exodus from Egypt. By his account, the Pharaoh Bocchoris, suffering from a plague, banished the Jews in response to an oracle of the god Zeus-Amun.
They hid Moses for three months, but as he got older he didn’t sleep as much and he cried louder than before. So his parents did the only thing they could do, they made a strong basket (sort of like a mini baby boat) and put blankets around the baby and placed the basket in some tall grass in the Nile river.

Going out to eat with kids is difficult under any circumstances—but it’s basically impossible when you have a newborn. Give your new parent-friends the gift of food from one of New York’s best restaurants. Russ & Daughter’s New York Brunch package, which, along with its other gift packages, ships to locations nationwide and includes a range of parenthood essentials—from coffee (necessary in those early, sleep-deprived days) to bagels, cream cheese, and lox (protein!), to chocolate babka (okay, not strictly “essential” but delicious nonetheless).
Adventure and high drama unfurl in this true story that carries all the seeds of tragedy, but ends happily. In the harsh Alaskan winter of 1917, a mother and her two young children, baby Ann and three-year old Betty, climbed into a horse-drawn sleigh, hoping to spend the winter in the kinder climate of Washington. During a violent snow storm, the horses tossed and scattered the passengers; Betty was pulled out from a swift current under ice, but baby Ann was swept away. Later in the day, two trappers found the baby in a basket floating down the icy river, and returned her, unharmed, to her mother. It’s a story of miracle, hardship, survival, and hope that is strongly enhanced by the author’s suspenseful telling and the illustrator’s exquisite winter scenes. His art is full of detail, from the red-cheeked, cherry-nosed travelers, to the cold clouds puffing from the horse’s nostrils, to the evident ferocity of the winter storm. This true story is wonderfully told and beautifully illustrated. I know it is true because I am a daughter of the “baby” in the story and I have a copy of the excellent journal account of fellow passenger Billy Shedwick.
After Ann and Jack moved to Seattle, they climbed every mountain in the area, including Mt. Rainier. Ann died age 96; older sister Betty died age 99. Both sisters loved the book and were very happy it was published; they gave copies to everyone they knew.

I hope that this list got your creative juices flowing! Now, just make or buy whatever strikes your fancy and get that basket put together. It’s best to start with the largest items, putting them towards the back, and filling in with smaller ones. You can also use coordinating tissue paper as filler, if needed. Play around and get the basket just how you like it, then either take a picture so that you can take it apart and reassemble it at the party (if you can’t leave it as it is for the ride), or use some of that spiffy shrink-wrap from the craft store! She’s going to love it!
Most of their worthwhile baskets will range from $30 to $50 – which is very reasonable considering what you get for the price. Artapanus goes on to relate how Moses returns to Egypt with Aaron, and is imprisoned, but miraculously escapes through the name of YHWH in order to lead the Exodus. This account further testifies that all Egyptian temples of Isis thereafter contained a rod, in remembrance of that used for Moses’ miracles. He describes Moses as 80 years old, “tall and ruddy, with long white hair, and dignified.”

Latter-day Saints are also unique in believing that Moses was taken to heaven without having tasted death (translated). In addition, Joseph Smith and Oliver Cowdery stated that on April 3, 1836, Moses appeared to them in the Kirtland Temple (located in Kirtland, Ohio) in a glorified, immortal, physical form and bestowed upon them the “keys of the gathering of Israel from the four parts of the earth, and the leading of the ten tribes from the land of the north.”
Tamales are relatively time-consuming to make from scratch, but they are exceptionally easy to reheat—in addition to being both delicious and filling. This Texas-based company sells tamales frozen, making them the perfect gifts for your friend who doesn’t have the time to whip up a batch on their own. The traditional gift box includes two dozen tamales made with a combination of ancho pork, 3-cheese queso, black bean and Oaxaca cheese, and fresh corn poblano. Bonus: It’s unlikely that your friend has ever gotten a box of tamales in the mail before.
Give a pack of a dozen flat cloth diapers. They can be used as burp cloths, wash cloths, small towels, an extra blanket in a pinch, a bib if you forget one, etc. Once baby grows out of them, they are great dish towels because they stand up to bleaching and a million washes.

Important figures in the Baha’i religion, such as Abdul’l-Baha, have highlighted the fact that Moses, like Abraham, had none of the makings of a great man of history, but through God’s assistance he was able achieve many great things. He is described as having been “for a long time a shepherd in the wilderness,” of having had a stammer, and of being “much hated and detested” by the Pharaoh and the ancient Egyptians of his time. He is said to have been raised in an oppressive household, and to have been known, in Egypt, as a man who had committed murder – though he had done so in order to prevent an act of cruelty.
“Hands down, the gift we recommend to most expecting families are swaddles, but not just any swaddle. These by Coveted Things are extra special and truly set themselves apart from the other brands because they’re so versatile—as a swaddle, of course, as a photo backdrop, as a burp cloth, as a nursing cover, as a blankie, as a carriage cover. Plus we love the artwork with beautiful messages in soft organic cotton. My personal favorite is the one that says, “Shit just got real.” — Alex Ng, owner Piccolini NYC

Food: New moms don’t have time to shop and cook from scratch, so frozen meals that just need reheating in the microwave are a huge help. Complete, one pot/pan meals are best. Try to include both family-sized dinners and single-serving lunches. Ideally, all containers should be disposable because new moms also don’t have time for housework. Consider adding disposable plates, bowls, cups (hot and cold), and utensils. Single serving packages of snacks and cold cereals would also be appreciated.
In subsequent years, theologians linked the Ten Commandments with the formation of early democracy. Scottish theologian William Barclay described them as “the universal foundation of all things… the law without which nationhood is impossible. …Our society is founded upon it. Pope Francis addressed the United States Congress in 2015 stating that all people need to “keep alive their sense of unity by means of just legislation… [and] the figure of Moses leads us directly to God and thus to the transcendent dignity of the human being.
