Historian Gladys L. Knight describes how leaders who emerged during slavery time and after often personified the Moses symbol. “The symbol of Moses was empowering in that it served to amplify a need for freedom.” Therefore, when Abraham Lincoln was assassinated in 1865 after freeing the slaves, Black Americans said they had lost “their Moses”. Lincoln biographer Charles Carleton Coffin writes, “The millions whom Abraham Lincoln delivered from slavery will ever liken him to Moses, the deliverer of Israel.” Similarly, Harriet Tubman, who rescued approximately seventy enslaved family and friends, was also described as the “Moses” of her people.
“This little bumper jumper is key to your sanity because it allows your baby to sit up, exercise, watch the room, and gives you hands-free moments.” — Phoebe Newman, foreign-service officer, mother of a 3-year-old and a 9-month-old
Gifts for babies are of course also given at baby showers, and the baby gifts that the new bundle of joy will always treasure are usually of the soft and cuddly kind. Give them the gift of a new best friend with a huggable stuffed animal or a fuzzy blanket. Toys like these are great gift ideas for a first birthday as well, since they are far from outgrowing them. For the soon-to-be-queen, a personalized tutu and body suit set and a princess banner are perfect girl’s 1st birthday gift ideas ideas to celebrate her day in style. Not to mention, they will make adorable photos!
So your best friend had a baby. And you’re completely clueless about the whole enterprise. What do you bring to the shower? Do you go with something cute or useful? (Probably useful.) But what’s the most useful? We decided to find out, asking an array of the world’s foremost baby experts (mostly new moms themselves, but also shop owners, medical professionals, and doulas): What’s the best baby-shower gift? Below, the very helpful responses. (And if you want to start a registry on Amazon, where most of our items are available, it’s a cinch.)
Most of their worthwhile baskets will range from $30 to $50 – which is very reasonable considering what you get for the price. In this price range, you will find an assortment of holiday-themed baskets, gourmet fruit baskets, specialty baskets and even Starbucks or other brand name gift sets. They also have sweets and assortments of baked goods – such as their well known chocolate covered strawberries – under $50 that can be incorporated into a gift basket or ordered separately.
Scholarly consensus sees Moses as a legendary figure and not a historical person. Rabbinic Judaism calculated a lifespan of Moses corresponding to 1391–1271 BCE; Jerome gives 1592 BCE, and James Ussher 1571 BCE as his birth year.[Note 2] In the Book of Deuteronomy, Moses was mentioned as “the man of God.”
Sound Machine: Having a little bit of white noise in the background can make all the difference between a baby who sleeps through the airplane flying over and a baby who wakes up and cries for the next hour.
One Israelite mother was afraid they would find her baby boy. She hid him for three months. Then the mother put her baby in a basket. She put the basket in the tall grass by the river. The baby’s sister, Miriam, stood by to watch the baby.
“These pacifier strings are fantastic because pacifiers are hideous but pacifier clips are even worse — but very necessary. These make them attractive.” —Cara Sullivan, floral designer, mother of a 5-year-old and a 2-year-old
I want to preach this morning from the subject, ‘The Birth of a New Nation.’ And I would like to use as a basis for our thinking together, a story that has long since been stenciled on the mental sheets of succeeding generations. It is the story of the Exodus, the story of the flight of the Hebrew people from the bondage of Egypt, through the wilderness and finally, to the Promised Land. …The struggle of Moses, the struggle of his devoted followers as they sought to get out of Egypt.
Harry & David has over a dozen baskets under $30 and dozens more under $50. You can even find gourmet gifts with wine for less than $75. “Honestly, if I could rate the customer service a 10 I would do so but your survey only allows up to a 5 rating…. This was the first time in at least 30 years that I received customer service like this. It was such a refreshing experience. I do plan on ordering more merchandise from your site in the future as events arise.. THANK YOU!!!” – Debbie M

“Even though many families are trying to stay away from these sorts of fluorescent plastic nightmares, this freestanding tripod swing can be a lifesaver. And while we try to be holistic, we also are realistic. There’s a mirror and some sound effects, and it can swing very gently to quite aggressively. It really kind of takes care of itself. Of all the things to have, this might be one to concede to. You have to cook, or you have to write an email, and sometimes you don’t want a baby on your hip when you’re doing that.” — Samantha Huggins, certified birth doula and educator, Carriage House Birth

The figure of Osarseph in Hellenistic historiography is a renegade Egyptian priest who leads an army of lepers against the pharaoh and is finally expelled from Egypt, changing his name to Moses.
If the new mom is planning to nurse her baby, you could put together a basket that she can keep near her. In that basket, you could fill it with water bottles, a lip balm, a magazine, and a pad of paper and a pen. Leave a spot for the TV remote and phone. Extras would be a baby blanket, some hand lotion, a little snack or two, some cotton swabs, baby nail clippers, and whatever else you can think of that your friend will like and use. It is nice to have everything close by. When the new mom is unable to get up because of a sleeping or nursing baby, it is handy to have everything close by, all in one basket.
“Mustela baby products are the best-smelling baby products in the world. They’re also European, so obviously superior in every way. I was given this exact gift bag, and I loved, loved, loved it. I thought the thing that was like ‘no rinse cleansing fluid’ was dumb, and that I’d be unlikely to ever use it — since I planned on bathing my baby like a human being. But — this stuff is amazing for cleaning under a baby’s neck. They get very gnarly neck cheese from little dribbles of milk. It’s also good after a big poop. Regardless of how well you wipe a butt with baby wipes, it will still have a faint poop smell that you might notice if you’ve literally ever kissed your baby’s ass.” — Elizabeth Verrelli, event planner, mother of a 2-year-old
“These nose-cleaning tweezers are THE BEST. They sneak right into those tiny nose holes and pull out the hardest-to-reach boogers so your little one can breathe.” —Phoebe Newman, foreign service officer, mother of a 3-year-old and a 9-month-old

After Ann and Jack moved to Seattle, they climbed every mountain in the area, including Mt. Rainier. Ann died age 96; older sister Betty died age 99. Both sisters loved the book and were very happy it was published; they gave copies to everyone they knew.
My neighbor is about to become a first-time mom. Along with the typical baby gift, I’d also like to give her a new mom gift basket. Since we haven’t had children yet, I’m not sure what to include in the basket? Can anyone give me some ideas for what to put in a new mom’s gift basket?
After nine months of not eating raw fish, almost nothing feels as luxurious as a decadent sushi feast for dinner—even if it’s via takeout rather than at the chef’s counter. Send your friend the gift of raw tuna. She will thank you.

Adventure and high drama unfurl in this true story that carries all the seeds of tragedy, but ends happily. In the harsh Alaskan winter of 1917, a mother and her two young children, baby Ann and three-year old Betty, climbed into a horse-drawn sleigh, hoping to spend the winter in the kinder climate of Washington. During a violent snow storm, the horses tossed and scattered the passengers; Betty was pulled out from a swift current under ice, but baby Ann was swept away. Later in the day, two trappers found the baby in a basket floating down the icy river, and returned her, unharmed, to her mother. It’s a story of miracle, hardship, survival, and hope that is strongly enhanced by the author’s suspenseful telling and the illustrator’s exquisite winter scenes. His art is full of detail, from the red-cheeked, cherry-nosed travelers, to the cold clouds puffing from the horse’s nostrils, to the evident ferocity of the winter storm. When shopping for baby gift baskets, pay attention to what each basket includes and consider what the family receiving the basket is most likely to want or need. Some common gift basket items are practical supplies that are useful for nearly everyone with a baby, including receiving blankets, burp cloths, hats, booties, baby body wash or shampoo and baby lotion. Most baskets also include cuddly stuffed animals and other playtime items, such as rattles. They may also include picture frames, keepsakes and music CDs.
“This sounds so silly but onesies that zip as opposed to snap are so helpful. Trying to button up on a squirmy babe is tough, especially after a middle-of-the-night diaper change, so we have a lot of these Hanna Andersson jammies. They are the best.” —Madeleine Fawcett, publicist, mother of 7-month-old
There are many joys to new motherhood—the first, of course, being the baby. The runner up, however, may well be all the amazing food people send you upon having recently given birth. Indeed, food gifts are great to give new parents. Baby clothes are cute, but it’s harder to guess people’s taste in infant outfits than it is to speculate whether or not they like really good cheese. In the days after I gave birth, I was exhausted, starving, and overwhelmed—but the arrival of a Russ & Daughters gift package to my doorstep was truly thrilling, not to mention sustaining.
“I still love these, even for a 3-year-old. Makes nail cutting much less scary and difficult along the soft keratin of baby nails.”—Amanda Olsen, real estate agent, mother of a 3-year-old and a 1-year-old

Baby in a Basket is a wonderful picture book for children! Based on a true story, it is set in Alaska, during the winter months. Beginning at a calm pace, it progresses to an appropriate level of suspense and excitement for a young child. The beautifully expressive illustrations assist in the interpretation as they set the story alive! Ted Rand’s use of color and texture makes you want to run your hand across the pages, and you almost expect to feel more than smoothness. His illustrations are a superb enhancement to a story that ends in celebration! I can’t help wondering if it was nominated for the Caldecott Award.

Grade 1-3?Using a true story from 1917 Alaska, the Rands have created a perfect marriage of text and illustration. Traveling from Fairbanks to Seattle in midwinter, Marie Boyer and her two daughters, Betty and Ann, are among passengers and freight tossed into an icebound river when the horses pulling their big sleigh panic. Betty is pulled under the ice and Ann, in her snug basket, vanishes in the Arctic dark. Rescued, Betty and the other passengers are comforted at a nearby lodge while a desperate search is mounted to find Ann. At the last moment, two trappers arrive to a joyous reception, carrying basket and baby Ann, discovered sliding down the river atop the ice, pushed by the freezing wind. Gloria Rand’s detailed, dramatic text is well matched by Ted Rand’s robustly wintry illustrations, and presents the hardships faced by Alaskan pioneers in a manner comprehensible to the young. Almost unbelievable in these days of jet planes and superhighways, this gripping tale of near tragedy will enrich a social studies curriculum. Even more, though, it’s an exciting “good read.”?Patricia Manning, formerly at Eastchester Public Library,
To Orthodox Jews, Moses is called Moshe Rabbenu, `Eved HaShem, Avi haNeviim zya”a: “Our Leader Moshe, Servant of God, Father of all the Prophets (may his merit shield us, amen)”. In the orthodox view, Moses received not only the Torah, but also the revealed (written and oral) and the hidden (the `hokhmat nistar teachings, which gave Judaism the Zohar of the Rashbi, the Torah of the Ari haQadosh and all that is discussed in the Heavenly Yeshiva between the Ramhal and his masters). He is also considered the greatest prophet.
In subsequent years, theologians linked the Ten Commandments with the formation of early democracy. Scottish theologian William Barclay described them as “the universal foundation of all things… the law without which nationhood is impossible. …Our society is founded upon it. Pope Francis addressed the United States Congress in 2015 stating that all people need to “keep alive their sense of unity by means of just legislation… [and] the figure of Moses leads us directly to God and thus to the transcendent dignity of the human being.
“I received the Leachco Sling–style Infant Lounger as a gift with my second baby, and I love it [editors’ note: we’ve written about this before], especially since I have a 23-month-old as well. I can prop this up on the kitchen table or somewhere out of reach of her ‘gentle’ touches, and know that everyone is safe. It’s also great when it’s time to shower, go to the bathroom, or make a quick breakfast.” — Rebecca Schultz, product designer, mother of a 23-month-old and a 6-week-old
Moses also figures in several of Jesus’ messages. When he met the Pharisee Nicodemus at night in the third chapter of the Gospel of John, he compared Moses’ lifting up of the bronze serpent in the wilderness, which any Israelite could look at and be healed, to his own lifting up (by his death and resurrection) for the people to look at and be healed. In the sixth chapter, Jesus responded to the people’s claim that Moses provided them manna in the wilderness by saying that it was not Moses, but God, who provided. Calling himself the “bread of life”, Jesus stated that He was provided to feed God’s people.
“Hands down, the most useful thing we have is the Dock-a-Tot, it looks like a baby life raft and has magical sleep-inducing powers over our son. I bought it based purely on Amazon reviews and celebrity endorsements, and I reckon I’d be a zombie without it.” — Erin Crawford, financial services, mother of a 6-month-old
